Tucked into a former SoMa warehouse on 11th Street, Slim’s was the kind of music venue where you could stand just feet from a band that might soon be playing arenas. Opened in 1988 by musician Boz Scaggs and a group of partners, the intimate club welcomed an extraordinary range of artists, from Prince and David Bowie to Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam and No Doubt, while remaining a vital stage for local musicians. Slim’s closed in March 2020 after more than three decades, taking with it a piece of the gritty, close-up live music culture that once made San Francisco nightlife feel unpredictable and electric.
