High above the corner of 17th and Mission, the enormous “17 Reasons Why!” sign became one of the Mission District’s most mysterious and beloved landmarks. Erected in 1935 to advertise Redlick’s Furniture, the slogan was intentionally curious—there weren’t actually 17 reasons; it was simply designed to get people’s attention. The store eventually disappeared, but the sign remained, outliving its original purpose and becoming a piece of San Francisco identity all its own. It was dismantled in 2002, ending nearly seven decades as a wonderfully strange fixture of the Mission skyline.
