The “17 Reasons Why!” sign, erected in 1935 atop the Redlick-Newman Furniture Building at 17th and Mission Streets, became a beloved landmark in San Francisco’s Mission District. Originally serving as an advertisement for the furniture store, the sign outlasted the business’s closure in 1975, evolving into a symbol of local identity and nostalgia. Community members rallied to save the sign, keeping it in place for years as a cherished piece of neighborhood history. Despite their efforts, it was eventually removed in the early 2000s, but its memory continues to evoke fond recollections among residents and historians.
