Step inside It’s Tops Coffee Shop and San Francisco suddenly felt a few decades younger. Opened in 1935 at Market and Octavia, the tiny diner was the real thing—wood-paneled walls, vinyl booths, tabletop jukeboxes, a turquoise counter and its unforgettable neon sign glowing outside. Generations came for pancakes, stuffed waffles, burgers, milkshakes and late-night meals served until 3 a.m. The Chapman family ran It’s Tops from 1952 until 2020, when the pandemic brought its long run to an end. After 85 years, San Francisco didn’t just lose another diner; it lost one of its last genuine time capsules.
